Job Purpose:

 

Provides strong and complex chemical assays for Refineries under TL Laboratory services Refineries scope’s, acting as owner of Lab Operations by: (1) Providing  results and technical interpretation for complex chemical assays, (2) Test runs and environment /corrosion monitoring specialized methods (3) Utilizing advanced lab equipment and computers to conduct complex analysis and developing new analytical methods, (4) Develops and maintains the Lab Quality System, and (5)  Guide Chemist and junior staff in the development of their function; in order to ensure the efficient quality and value added services, give the effective solutions and commit the technical requirements to optimize business performance and in turn profitability, to support operations.

 

The position will act in accordance with the Group’s Mission, Vision, Values & Strategies, as well as, policies, guidelines, and standards, supported by an IT Technology platform, HSE standards, Omani’s government & other legal justifications, and best international practices in consonance with national objectives.

 

Main tasks and responsibilities

 

Scope of the role: 

 

Lab analysis for the following areas:

CDUs, VDU & DCU: Crude / Vacuum Distillation,

RFCC: Residue Fluidized Catalytic Cracking

HCU, Hydrotreaters, HGU:

Hydrocracker Unit 

Hydrotreaters: Hydro-desulfurization (HDS) to remove sulfur and nitrogen compounds from natural gas and other refined petroleum products like diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel.

Hydrogen Generation Unit: Pre-desulfurization section, followed by desulfurization, reforming and process gas cooling with high temperature shift conversion to increase the hydrogen content of the process gas.

Offsite Operations: Tank Farm, Waste-water Treatment, Sulfur Granulation, Non-Plant areas

Utilities: Steam, fuel, various waters, air, electrical power, and sewers

 

Accountabilities:

Sampling:

Reviews and rationalize complex sampling and testing frequency in coordination with PES and Operation and establish testing priorities.

To ensure periodic meeting in the Optimization of sample schedule against the work load

To be competent on sampling philosophy of Petroleum final products

Senior Chemist:

Analysing of organic and inorganic compounds to determine chemical and physical properties, composition, structure, relationships, and reactions, utilizing chromatography, spectroscopy, and various complex sophisticated analytical techniques.

Compile and analyse complex test information to determine process or equipment operating efficiency and to diagnose malfunctions.

Making recommendations based on their findings.

Work under the guidance of supervision of TL laboratory.

Interprets complex and specialized data analysis to advise PES and Operation in process troubleshooting.

Developing and implementing laboratory procedures and quality control measures

Develops Lab activities method statements and procedures for building up and maintaining Lab Quality system.

Interpret results, databases  in LIMS for specifications, Test methods, and standard equipments

To be highly competent in monitoring and support to Lead Chemist on Laboratory management systems  ISO 17025 , 14001 , 9001 , 45001 systems

To guide and coach the chemist in Interlab and Intra Lab proficiency Testing programs and interpreting the Z Score Target

To be efficient in preparing the SOPs , Work Instructions , Procedures and Forms pertained to Refinery

To Oversee the Chemist in testing of scale , sludge , Deposits and special samples and to review the reports and to monitor the SQC Schedule samples on completion

To be competent as LIMS administrator activities and SAP application pertained to Laboratory activities

To contribute the Knowledge sharing sessions to the Team members on periodic basis and mentor the training sessions

To be Masterty in the Refinery Product Specifications and well familiar with International Standard Testing Methods like ASTM , IP , UOP , SMS , IFP etc..

To Perform the Calibration  activities in align with schedule pertained to Refinery for sophisticated analysers and oversee the calibration performed the chemist

To effectively check the assigned process Test Results Trends on Refinery Process units for the deviation or any abnormal results and IOW / POW samples completion within TAT

To support the Laboratory Capability Coach in providing the inputs for Task book , Gap analysis and Technical support for coaching Chemist and shift staff

To support the Team Lead in the budget preparation of Laboratory OPEX and CAPEX and to provide the Technical evaluation on new analysers and the critical items of spares , consumables , standards pertained to Refinery

Development of new products or processes, or to optimize existing processes:

Confer with TSD and Operations for conducting blending studies, interpreting test results, developing nonstandard tests, and optimizing processes.

 Lead in Incident Investigations and capable in RCA Analytical methodology

Responsible for the development of new products or processes, or to optimize existing processes.

Accountable in setting up the back-up Method in available existing analysers and responsible to impart Training to the Sub Ordinates

Lab Equipment:

higher level of responsibility and decision-making

Managing projects and oversee the technical requirements in procuring new analysers

To closely Monitor the Preventive Maintenance and break down history of records performed by Lab senior equipment specialitist in monitoring the Lab equipment Reliability

Stakeholders:

Work closely with other departments within the refinery, such as engineering or production, to troubleshoot problems or identify opportunities for process improvement.

Reporting:

Creating Technical reports and to review/interpret Technical Standards

Preparing and maintaining laboratory reports and documentation

Housekeeping:

Maintain Integrity of Laboratory Analysers and Completes safety Check List with Good Laboratory Practices

External: Service providers and Company Suppliers.

Notable Working Conditions: Field Operations and office environment, Moderate to intensive computer screen use.

Education Requirements: Minimum Qualifications for this position are bachelor’s degree in chemistry.

Language Requirements: Excellent knowledge of written, read, and spoken English (required) | Arabic - Native (desirable)

 

Background and Experience:

6-8 years of relevant experience

Experienced in Quality system requirement (OHSAS, ISO: 9001 14001,45001 17025)

Experienced with products specifications and LIMS.

Experienced with test runs, optimization, and product blend trials.

Mandatory to complete the ITQAN Day Staff Assessment for Chemist

Knowledge:

 

Knowledge of process streams, their typical components and concentration.

Knowledge of Standard Methods (ASTM, UOP, IP, IFP, SMS ,APHA).

Proficient in LIMS sample life cycle and can revise/update another functional module.

Knowledgeable with Gas Chromatography, Spectroscopy, Dry Colorimetry, Elemental analysers, and other sophisticated analytical instrumentation

Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory analytical equipment, petroleum test methods and test significance and chemical analysis

Knowledge of process streams, their typical components and concentration.

Good knowledge in Quality Assurance, Quality Control and HSE plans.

Familiar with techniques for ensuring data integrity with various integration of information/ reports.

To be competent in SAP Modules regarding procurement , Contract & Inventory and evaluation on Technical bids and preparing scope

To be skilled and competent with ISO Management systems like 17025 , 9001 , 14001 & 45001
