Job Purpose:

The Lead Engineer – Mechanical provides advanced technical expertise, guidance, and assurance in mechanical engineering activities within the Central Mechanical Support Department. The role ensures safe, reliable, and cost-effective mechanical solutions across projects and operations, while maintaining compliance with international codes, industry standards, and company requirements. The incumbent supports the Team Lead in delivering high-quality engineering services, mentoring engineers, and contributing to continuous improvement of mechanical systems and processes.

 

The position will act in accordance with the Group’s Mission, Vision, Values & Strategies, as well as, policies, guidelines, and international standards, supported by an IT Technology platform, HSE standards, Omani’s government & other legal justifications, and best international practices in consonance with national objectives.

 

Main tasks and responsibilities

Technical Support

Serve as subject matter expert for mechanical engineering issues, offering guidance and solutions to ensure operational reliability and efficiency.

Review engineering deliverables, including design packages, specifications, calculations, and reports.

Provide troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and resolution for critical mechanical equipment failures.

Ensure compliance with assets management standards, HSSE requirements, and regulatory obligations.

Project & Operations Interface

Support major capital projects, maintenance activities, and turnarounds by providing timely mechanical engineering input.

Lead technical evaluations, and cost-benefit analyses for equipment upgrades or modifications.

Coordinate with procurement and vendors to ensure the quality, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of supplied mechanical equipment.

Participate in risk assessments, hazard reviews, and incident investigations.

Project & Operations Support

 

Oversee mechanical engineering inputs to capital projects, turnarounds, and maintenance activities.

Ensure the timely delivery of technical evaluations.

Coordinate with procurement and contractors to ensure cost-effective and high-quality execution.

Contribute to risk assessments, root cause analysis, and incident investigations as required.

Performance & Continuous Improvement

Identify opportunities for improving asset reliability, maintainability, and performance of mechanical equipment.

Recommend and implement advanced engineering practices and emerging technologies.

Contribute to departmental KPIs and ensure delivery of high-quality engineering services.

Internal: Maintenance – RPI & Plastics Maintenance, Operations & TSD.

External: Contractors, Vendors & Suppliers

Notable Working Conditions. Field Operations and office environment, Moderate to intensive computer screen use.

Education requirements

Minimum Qualification for this position is a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent.

Any further qualifications such as MBA or further engineering degree will be an advantage.

Language requirements 

Excellent knowledge of written, read, and spoken English (required) | Arabic - Native (desirable)

Background and experience

Competencies and skills

Relevant experience, at least 8-10 years (Oil & Gas / Petrochemical or Refinery Plant experience preferred).

Mechanical (Rotating) Engineer role within the Oil & Gas / Refinery / Petrochemical industry.

Well versed on the latest International Code & Standards related to   Mechanical maintenance such as API 610, 674, 675, 682, 617, 618, 673, 616, 611/612, NFPA, etc.

Sound judgment in maintenance matters with good skills in engineering field materials specifications and international standards.

Experience in in the design and troubleshooting of rotating equipment.

Knowledge in operating and maintaining the reliability of equipment.

Good knowledge in Quality Assurance, Quality Control and HSE plans.

Familiar with techniques for ensuring data integrity with various integration of information/ reports.

Knowledge of:

Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).

Expertise in SAP- PM.

Process Equipment Life-Cycle Management.

HSE (Permit to Work – PTW, Process Safety, H2S Awareness, Basic Fire Fighting, Emergency Response)

Experience and well versed in field investigation, inspections, troubleshooting, performance checks, data compilation, etc.

Understanding of Process Plant (P& ID / PFD) & Engineering drawings and OEM manuals.

Experience with Centrifugal Pumps, Centrifugal Compressors, Gear Boxes, Turbo expanders, Gas turbines, steam turbines, Fans, and blowers

Experience in rotating equipment condition monitoring, thermodynamic performance data analysis

Good experience and knowledge of maintenance processes, handling of Maintenance Contracts, and shutdown-related jobs.

Technical:

Computer Literacy including MS Office

Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), SAP- PM Module. Primavera P6 / MSP.

Computer problem solving skills, ability to identify and resolve problems with appropriate resources

Sound judgment in technical matters with good skills in engineering field materials specifications and international standards.

Engineering Performance systems & Management strategy experience is a strong plus Strong technical background in maintenance

Ability to schedule major shutdown projects

Ability to align the requirements of operations and maintenance

Deep understanding of safety and environmental regulations Project management skills.
