Job purpose

 

Provide geological and geophysical expertise to lead and guide geoscience activities across exploration and appraisal projects. This role involves integrating geological, geophysical, and geochemical data to evaluate subsurface potential, de-risk prospects and drive the company’s exploration strategy. The Principal Geoscientist also plays a key role in mentoring younger staff and ensuring the delivery of high-quality technical outputs. Additionally, the role supports the evaluation of potential upstream opportunities by conducting thorough geoscience due diligence and contributing to or reviewing technical studies in collaboration with third parties.

The position will act in accordance with the OQEP’s Mission, Vision, Values & Strategies, as well as, policies, guidelines and international standards, supported by an IT Technology platform, HSE standards, Omani’s government & other legal justifications, and best international practices in consonance with national objectives.

Main tasks and responsibilities

  • Lead regional and prospect-scale geological and geophysical evaluations.
  • Perform basin and play fairway analysis to identify new exploration opportunities
  • Oversee the integration of seismic, well, and geochemical data to generate robust subsurface models
  • Perform seismic interpretation (2D and 3D), well correlation and seismic attribute analysis.
  • Perform time to depth conversion and velocity sensitivity analysis for exploration opportunities.
  • Conduct hydrocarbon volumetric assessment (Probabilistic/Deterministic).
  • Conduct geological risk/uncertainty assessment of plays/prospects/leads
  • Communicate geophysical and geological understanding through preparation of well proposals and presentations.
  • Participate in proposing new data gathering (e.g. seismic data acquisition and processing, core data acquisition/ interpretation, Petrophysical data, etc.)
  • Initiate, lead and review subsurface studies to support the evaluation of basins, plays, and prospects.
  • Support the preparation of notional development plans/concepts for feasibility assessment purposes
  • Support technical due diligence processes, data room visits or preparation of data rooms
  • Contribute to the preparation of investment/ farm-in proposals.
  • Supports strategic exploration planning and portfolio management
  • Provide technical input to the short (yearly) and med (5 years) term exploration business plan.
  • Mentor and coaching Geoscience staff to improve their skills and develop them into self-sufficient performers
  • Ensure to Work safely and think proactively about personal safety and safety of others at work
  • Actively participate in, contribute to, and promote company occupational health, safety, security and environment culture.
  • Ensure work is carried out in accordance with the Company HSE and Security policies and procedures and meet company HSE goals and targets and participate in HSE programs.

Notable Working Conditions. Office environment, intensive computer screen use, sporadic visits to operation site.

Education requirements

BSc in Geo-science or any related degree

Language requirements 

Excellent knowledge of written, read, and spoken English (required) | Arabic - Native (desirable)

Background and experience

Competencies and skills

 

  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience
  • Robust experience in G&G data interpretations workflows and methods for play mapping, prospect generation and evaluation, volumetric estimation, and geological risk analysis.
  • Deep understanding of regional geology, structural interpretation, stratigraphy, and petroleum systems.
  • Work Experience in variety of geological/basin settings.
  • Experienced with both exploration and development of upstream oil and gas activities
  • Relevant software experience in Petrel and ArcGIS
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) with proficiency in written and spoken English
  • Track record of deadline delivery and result oriented with ability to prioritize and deliver
  • Experienced mentor and coach
  • Preference for Omani candidates
