Job purpose

Subject matter expert contributing to the Group’s ESG and sustainability strategy vision and execution. This role will work hand-in-hand with the Head of Sustainability to integrate ESG principles across business units, elevate disclosures, and accelerate progress on OQ’s climate and sustainability goals.

 

The position will act in accordance with the Group’s Mission, Vision, Values & Strategies, as well as, policies, guidelines and international standards, supported by an IT Technology platform, HSE standards, Omani’s government & other legal justifications, and best international practices in consonance with national objectives.

Main tasks and responsibilities

 

1. Strategic Leadership and ESG Direction

  • Drive sustainability roadmap development, aligned with OQ’s strategy and Oman Vision 2040.
  • Develop and monitor ESG KPIs and science-based targets, especially related to emissions, water, energy, and circularity.
  • Scan for ESG risks, transition risks, and market shifts to future-proof the business.

 

2. Technical Advisory and Subject Matter Expertise

  • Prepares GHG emissions accounting, reporting, and verification in line with international protocols such as the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064.
  • Guide the development of decarbonisation pathways and emissions reduction targets—including methane, flaring, and other high-impact indicators.
  • Identify and implement performance levers such as energy efficiency, water conservation, and carbon credit mechanisms to enhance sustainability outcomes.
  • Apply tools like Marginal Abatement Cost Curves (MACCs) to evaluate and prioritise emission reduction projects and inform investment decisions.
  • Analyse energy consumption trends, develop intensity benchmarks, and conduct performance comparisons to drive cost savings and operational efficiency.

 

3. Integration and Business Alignment

  • Work with Finance, Strategy, Risk, Procurement, and Ops to embed ESG into capital allocation, supply chain, and risk frameworks.
  • Champion integration of IFRS S1/S2, GRI, SASB, TCFD, and SDG-aligned practices into core processes.

 

4. Digital Enablement and Data Intelligence

  • Collaborate with IDS to ensure real-time, auditable ESG data systems.
  • Develop dashboards and workflows that support internal ESG tracking and external reporting.

 

5. Reporting, Disclosure, and Benchmarking

  • Own the preparation of ESG disclosures and coordinate across departments to meet local and global investor-grade requirements.
  • Improve ESG scores with rating agencies through proactive benchmarking and gap closure.

 

6. Capability Building and Knowledge Transfer

  • Deliver training, toolkits, and mentoring sessions across the company to build sustainability awareness.
  • Support cross-departmental knowledge sharing and embed ESG accountability at all levels.

 

7. Stakeholder Engagement and External Representation

  • Represent OQ in national working groups, industry roundtables, and global ESG events.
  • Engage key stakeholders, including regulators, investors, JV partners, and auditors, to ensure alignment on ESG expectations.

Notable Working Conditions.                          

  • Office environment, intensive computer screen use, sporadic visits to operation site.
  • This role may require local and international travel on an ad-hoc basis.

Education requirements

  • Minimum qualification is a bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Engineering, Sustainability, Business Administration, or a related discipline is required.
  • A master’s degree in a relevant field is preferred
  • Professional certifications such as GRI Standards Certified, ISO 14064, IEMA, ISSP, CFA ESG, or equivalent are considered is a plus.

Excellent knowledge of written, read, and spoken English (required)

Background and experience

Competencies and skills

  • A minimum of 8-10 years in ESG/sustainability.
  • Strong track record in ESG strategy, climate reporting, and energy transition initiatives.
  • Proven experience with international reporting frameworks and assurance practices.
  • Sectoral familiarity with energy, heavy industry, or infrastructure is a strong advantage.

 

  • Deep knowledge of ESG standards, frameworks, and regulatory developments.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the use of sustainability modelling and forecasting tools.
  • Ability to communicate complex sustainability concepts clearly and persuasively to diverse audiences.
  • Strategic mindset with ability to influence decision-making at the executive level.
  • Project management skills with attention to timelines, deliverables, and impact measurement.
  • Collaboration, leadership, and mentoring capabilities.
  • High degree of professional integrity and commitment to continuous learning.
